A Special One-Night-Only
Performance
This evening, September 13, 2024 (Friday), the stage of traditional performing art "Bunraku" will make its appearance for one day only at "Sembikiya-Sohonten," which has been continuing since the 5th year of Tenpo (1834).
The story woven by the puppets, the captivating chants of the tayu, and the melodies of the shamisen will invite you into the fantastical world of the Edo period. Afer the performance, enjoy an "Order-Based All-You-Can-Eat Fruit" using selected fruits from Japan and abroad.
Please fully enjoy the charm of "Bunraku" puppet theater (Ningyo-joruri) along with the vibrant scenes of Nihonbashi, both past and present.
A Traditional Performing Art Continuing
Since the Edo Period
"Bunraku puppet theater," one of Japan's three major traditional performing arts alongside "Noh" and "Kabuki," and designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset, is a comprehensive art form where "puppeteers" control the puppets, "tayu" express the scenes and emotions, and "shamisen" direct the performance with their tones, intonation, and pacing, all working in perfect harmony.
In the storytelling of the Gidayu-bushi style, the tayu and shamisen create a tense atmosphere, while the puppets, seemingly imbued with life through the puppeteers' skill, convey emotions. It is said that because they are "puppets," viewers can project their own emotions and empathize even more deeply than with human actors.
Experience the allure of "Bunraku," renowned as the world's pinnacle of puppet theater.
Kotobuki Sambaso
"Sambaso" originally carried the meaning of praying for a bountiful harvest of grains, but over time it transitioned to being performed often during celebrations or at the start of events.
This ceremonial dance is performed and highly valued not only in Bunraku but also in other traditional Japanese performing arts such as Noh, Kabuki, and Kagura. To commemorate the 190th anniversary of Sembikiya-Sohonten, we express our gratitude to all our patrons through this performance.

Introduction of fruits
Musk Melon (Earl's Favorite Variety)
The name derives from its strong musk-like aroma.
This melon is cultivated using the luxurious method of growing only one fruit per stem in a glass greenhouse. It excels in fragrance, sweetness, and texture, and its noble flavor makes it truly the king of fruits.
Please enjoy Sembikiya’s Musk Melon.
Shine Muscat from Okayama Prefecture
A hybrid of "Akitsu-21" and "Hakunan." Developed by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization and
registered as a variety in 2006. These grapes have a robust
sweetness, a refreshing Muscat aroma, and excellent flavor.
The large, yellow-green grapes are seedless and can be eaten
with the skin on.
